Have You Seen This, Adam? #8 Imogen Heap ‘You Know Where to Find Me’

International music star Imogen Heap sent Adam her newest video ‘You Know Where to Find Me’ to test his emotions to. Find out how he got on!

Hello and welcome once again to ‘Have You Seen This, Adam?’ I’m Adam and as the Guinea Pig of the Sensum office, I’ll be recording and sharing my emotional response to the videos you think will get my emotions running using the cutting-edge Sensum product.

This week we’ve been invited by the wonderful musician, composer and artist Imogen Heap to use her new music video ‘You Know Where To Find Me’ for Have You Seen This, Adam?

Imogen has been at the forefront of experimental music, shifting between music genres and styles to create some of the most dynamic compositions. Furthermore her use of technology in music is apparent with the likes of ‘The Gloves’. Using nothing but hand gestures, Imogen can loop, record and amplify audio signals captured by onboard microphones, creating unique performances every time.

Now with Sensum, she will be able to see how the public are emotionally engaged with her music.

As the video begins below you can see from the low visualisation that I am quite engaged already, which is a departure from a lot of the videos I have done over the past 8 weeks. I think the initial time-lapse and distant piano have played a major part in this, as I am a sucker for both!

What happens next is very interesting. You see that the visualisation begins to grow rapidly as the music continues. From what videos we have previously used for HYSTA, we have come to the conclusion that I was losing engagement when the graph beings to rise into the red. But, I really enjoyed this track and video and felt that I was engrossed the entire time. So after further research and testing done by others at Sensum Towers, we can see that the sub-conscious part of my brain, which is related to anticipation, fear and anxiety is not being challenged. My relaxation has overpowered the Autonomic Nervous System (i.e. fight or flight) causing the increase in the graph.

And again it continues to rise throughout.

We decided to pinpoint what emotion I could pin point to after watching this. We looked at the Plutchik Wheel, developed by Robert Plutchik and I pointed to the closet emotion that described how I felt.

I chose ‘serenity’ on the basis of how engrossed I was with the content and how I felt afterwards. This has allowed us to look at this graph on a 3-D basis, not just relying on my emotional engagement to interrupt the data.

Right up to the very end of the video you can see the continuous rise of the graph and how my body has become so relaxed into the music video.

We would like to thank Imogen Heap so much for inviting us to use Sensum with her content. Not only has this given her information into how fans/non-fans engage with her music, but also as a research tool for us to look into how music and music videos affect our emotional engagement compared to films and adverts.

Until next time!
